Community Clean-Up

Date

Time

09:00 AM to 02:00 PM

Location

Kelvin Riverside Path, meet at the Mill Bridge

Description

The clean-up and the quarterly water sample happen on the same day, which is deliberate: the people picking litter out of the Kelvin should see the number that comes back from the laboratory.

The day

  • 09:00 — Meet at the Mill Bridge. Gloves, pickers and bags provided.
  • 09:30 — Three teams: upstream of the outfall, the outfall itself, downstream to the weir.
  • 11:00 — Emily Adams takes the quarterly sample at the two downstream fixed points, with anyone who wants to watch.
  • 12:30 — Lunch at the boathouse, and a look at the last four years of data.

What to bring

Boots you do not mind. Everything else is provided. Under-16s are welcome with an adult; there is a shorter route for younger children that stays on the made-up path.

Why it matters more than it looks

Fourteen years of quarterly sampling by volunteers is the only continuous environmental record the district has. It is the reason the Kelvin outfall is now an argument the council has to have rather than one it can decline.
